D10 - Accessibility Basics: Making Word Documents Accessible

Ethical research must adhere to the principle of justice, which means that research studies (including informed consent) must be designed and conducted with accessibility in mind. Accessibility is crucial, not only because of the federal civil rights law Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but also to ensure that research is available to all people. This session will briefly explain the terms and concepts associated with the ADA and accessibility and will focus on solutions and tips for supporting accessible Word documents in IRB review. Attendees will learn how to create accessible Word documents, participate in a hands-on workshop to practice accessibility tools in Word, and discuss use of new and innovative tools such as AI to improve and expand access to research participation. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or device to create a digitally accessible document during the session.
