Purna Garimella currently serves as the Director of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) at Indiana University. In this role, Mr. Garimella oversees the strategic direction and functions of the IU HRPP, ensuring the ethical conduct and regulatory compliance of human subjects research across all IU campuses and affiliated hospitals. Prior to this role, Mr. Garimella dedicated 13+ years to the University of Michigan Medical School's IRB, where he started as an intern and held various progressive positions, culminating as Assistant Director, overseeing 22+ IRB professionals and 15,000 submissions annually.
Mr. Garimella holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research Administration and a Bachelor of Pharmacy in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He also obtained professional certifications: Certified IRB Professional (CIP) in 2013 and Regulatory Affairs Certification (RAC) in 2014. He is a PRIM&R Mentor, a member of AEREO (The Consortium to Advance Effective Research Ethics Oversight), and a member of the Big Data IRB Collaborative Working Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML). With more than 15 years of experience in clinical research and regulatory affairs, Mr. Garimella is passionate about contributing to advancing research compliance and regulatory affairs programs.
