Sally Thompson-Iritani, DVM/PhD, is the Assistant Vice Provost for Animal Care, Outreach, and the 3Rs at the University of Washington’s Office of Research, where she champions a culture of care through the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), outreach initiatives, and the Dare to Care (D2C) program. With a diverse background in industry and academia, she has served as a laboratory animal veterinarian, IACUC administrator, and preclinical researcher. Certified in IACUC administration and Compassion Fatigue, Dr. Thompson-Iritani advocates for ethical, compassionate approaches to animal care.
At UW, she spearheads initiatives that support personnel working with research animals, promoting the 3Rs as a foundational element of institutional culture. Nationally, she holds influential roles as President of the 3Rs Collaborative, Chair of the BAHSCR Roundtable, Vice-Chair for the US Animal Research Openness Initiative (USARO), and a board member of the Scientists Center for Animal Welfare (SCAW). Additionally, she serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Alternative Toxicological Methods (SACATM) and as Treasurer for the WSVMA and the Feral Cat Spay and Neuter Project. Her leadership fosters transparency, ethical practices, and a robust culture of care across the UW community and the broader research landscape.
