Anatomical Donations Coordinator, UVA Center for Applied Biomechanics
Sara is the Anatomical Donations Coordinator for the University of Virginia’s Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB). She holds both a BS and MS in Biology with a concentration in human anatomy, a MS in Pharmacy with a concentration in forensic science, and an AAS in Mortuary Science. She has 15 years’ experience in postmortem care, which, paired with previous university-level laboratory and teaching experience, allow her to effectively manage and maximize the altruistic gift of cadaveric donations for applied injury biomechanics research.
As the centralized contact for acquisition of all cadaveric donations from in-state and out-of-state suppliers, Sara provides decedent care and facilitates communication/consents between the CAB, donor families, donation programs, and funeral homes. Her responsibilities include cadaveric specimen consent/procurement, storage, inventory maintenance, preparation, testing, autopsy, and final disposition. Specialized research skills include instrumentation of Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) for experimental testing and data capture, performing post-test autopsy examinations/dissections to identify injury, radiological imaging interpretation, and documentation/coding of injuries/injury severity using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS).
Sara is a NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), a Virginia Funeral Service Licensee (FSL, Embalmer & Funeral Director), an AISC.B Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale [AIS] Specialist (CAISS), and an AATB Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS). She also holds an appointment as a Per Diem Medicolegal Death Investigator (PDMDI) for the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME-C). Driven by a lifelong love for dogs, Sara is dedicated to supporting Virginia’s Search and Rescue (SAR) K9 training efforts to ensure successful rescue and recovery missions.
