Derek Norford, DVM, MS, PhD, CPIA holds the positon of University Veterinarian and Research Scientist at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he has worked since July 2000. Dr. Norford also directs the Animal Resources Complex and serves as Attending Veterinarian at NCCU. Dr. Norford spearheaded the development of the animal care resources at NCCU leading to accreditation by AAALAC International in 2010. He also serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the Animal Care and Use Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&TSU). Dr. Norford has worked to secure funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for alterations and renovations of animal care facilities at NCCU and NCA&TSU. He has over 10 years’ experience reviewing animal resource infrastructure and research grant applications for NIH. He has over 30 years of service as an IACUC member at the two institutions. He is a Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) and recently became a member of PRIM&R's Council for CPIA. He also has begun serving as one of the Co-chairs of the PRIMR24 Poster Abstract Review Committee representing Animal Care and Use poster abstracts. Dr. Norford has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses in laboratory animal science and cell biology, respectively. He has trained high school, undergraduate and graduate students in biomedical research and laboratory animal sciences.His research interests are centered on development of animal models of human diseases, with current emphasis on the use of zebrafish. Dr. Norford also collaborates with scientists in the Rodent Behavior Core and the High throughput Zebrafish Screening Core at NCCU.
