I began a new phase of life in April 2003, replacing a career in the State of Maryland’s Division of Correction, with healing and learning to recover after life changing medical events. Trauma, Infection, Gangrene, Surgery, Hyperbaric Medicine, Stroke, Coma, and Rehabilitation marked the beginning of my journey. I have had an incredible recovery. Leaving In-Patient rehabilitation, I could not walk, talk, remember sequences longer than three items and was on a feeding tube. Now I am alive, aware, grateful, and focused on supporting others who are going through their own challenges.
With other survivors, I was invited to meet with researchers proposing a study. Having my responses heard and listened to made me excited to continue with the Program of Randomized trials to Evaluate Pre-operative antiseptic skin solutions In orthopaedic Trauma (PREP-IT) Studies; from writing the protocol to publication.
It led me to joining the Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) of the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC) at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Institutional Review Board (IRB). This year I have also been appointed to the National Institutes of Health IRB as a Non-Scientist and Prisoner Representative.
