Dr. Andrea Rossing McDowell is the (remote) HRPP Administrator at Western Washington University, where she established clearer HRPP/IRB policies, improved review and approval turnaround times, enhanced educational outreach, and built a positive, collegial reputation across campus. Andrea frequently collaborates with the Vice Provost of Research and other campus leaders to promote a culture of research integrity at WWU and to create bridges between offices with shared interests. Previously, Andrea served as Seattle University Institutional Review Board Administrator for 13 years. Andrea often presents for PRIM&R on SBER and small research programs, as well as research on college campuses; she has also served on conference planning committees and co-chaired the PRIM&R SBER preconference. She authored the updated CITI module on students in research and is a CITI peer review editor. Andrea also teaches Business Communication and Business Editing for the Seattle University Albers School of Business and Economics. Her research on non-human animals in Russian and Soviet literature has been published in several journals; her article on Bulgakov’s “Heart of a Dog” was included in the book _Short Story Criticism: Mikhail Bulgakov_. Andrea holds bachelor’s degrees in both Journalism and Russian literature from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Slavic Studies, and a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs administration from Indiana University-Bloomington. As a professional communicator and educator with more than 30 years’ experience, Andrea creates clear organizational policies, strategic plans, and effective messaging; develops rigorous and inclusive course content to ensure high student engagement; lectures in and outside the university setting on multidisciplinary topics; edits academic journal articles, non-fiction books, and creative writing; crafts speeches for other professionals (including the chancellor of a major university); and provides career consultation guidance (resumes and application materials) for emerging and established leaders. As a neuroqueer professional, Andrea enjoys connecting with other neurospicy individuals to promote ND awareness and to normalize ND unmasking in professional settings.
