Virginia McLaurin, Ph.D., is the Assistant Director of the Human Research Protection Office at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She completed a Master’s and PhD in Anthropology at UMass with a focus on Indigenous Studies and digital media, as well as graduate certificates in Indigenous Studies and in Film Studies. As a graduate student and staff member, she served on several undergraduate research committees as an IRB liaison. She then joined the Human Research Protection Office in 2022 as an analyst, translating her human subjects research experience into review of protocols.
As Assistant Director, particular points of interest in her work are ethnographic research, digital and social media, big data and AI, and Indigenous research concerns, as well as developing strong collaborative relationships with researchers.
