Mary (Molly) Klote, MD, Director, Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), US Department of Health and Human Service (HHS). The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) provides leadership in the protection of the rights, welfare, and wellbeing of human subjects involved in research conducted or supported by HHS. OHRP is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Office of the Secretary of HHS. OHRP provides clarification and guidance, develops educational programs and materials, maintains regulatory oversight, and provides advice on ethical and regulatory issues in biomedical and behavioral research. OHRP also supports the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), which advises the HHS Secretary on issues related to protecting human subjects in research. I have 15 years of increasing responsibilities over research and human subjects protection policy, education, and compliance. Prior to becoming the Director, OHRP, I oversaw all human research policy and education for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and before that for the United States Army through the office of the Army Surgeon General. I am a retired career Army officer and leader in effective, efficient, and compliant policy, education, and oversight in human subjects research. I am board certified in Allergy Immunology. I have conducted and published research in immunology, immunodeficiency, and vaccine safety and effectiveness. I have chaired three IRBs and served as an Instiutional Official for VHA Central Office.
